Dashcam integrated with SYNC 4 Ford Mustang Mach-e GT

I installed dashcam in Ford Mustang Mach-e GT. I chose camera sold by \ official Ford distribution network as an accessory dedicated to Ford group cars. This is the only driving recorder that is integrated with SYNC4 system used in Ford group cars, including Mustang Mach-e. The camera has a Ford catalog number of 2 730 087. The part name on the label is Ford KU4J-10F867. It is manufactured for Ford by Falcon Electronics as the DVR-H-787-FRD model.
Some parameters of the dashcam:
  • Full HD resolution (SONY sensor, Ambarella image processor)
  • 139° viewing angle (111° horizontally and 57° vertically)
  • via Applink the dashcam can be configured and controlled directly from the car screen equipped with the SYNC 3 or SYNC 4 system
  • via Applink the recorder can be controlled using voice commands
  • GPS sensor – information about geographical position and speed on the recording
  •  crash sensor – automatic recording in the event of an accident with a buffer of 1 minute before the event and 1 minute after the event
  • continuous loop recording after switching on the ignition
  • parking mode allowing for recording events when the car is stationary in the event of shock occurrence (1 minute recording) with power draw below 10 Microamps (0.00001A) when the parking function is turned
  • 60 frames per second (30 with the HDR option turned on)
  • 256GB microSD card
  • 12V DC power supply, connected directly to BCM
  • Bluetooth for setting device functions and control via mobile device
  • Wi-Fi for live viewing and file transfer from SD card (5Ghz, 2.4Ghz)
  • Operation in temperature range from -40°C to +85°C

Due to the high cost of a new one, I bought a used Ford dashcam.

The Ford SYNC4 dashcam should be connected to the BCM control unit according to the instructions that can be downloaded from the Internet. The instructions explain how to connect the BCM plug cables for each of the supported Ford group car models.

Wiring harness arrangement

Connecting the cables to the BCM of Ford Mustang Mach E GT. The BCM is located in front of the passenger seat, below the glove box. My used set was missing pins to insert into the plug. I added other matching pins and soldered them to the original DVR harness cables outside the plugConnection of groundingAfter connecting the dashcam, you can download the Ford DashCam application to your phone and connect to the camera according to the instructions. After configuration, the video recorder is visible both on the car screen and on the phone. The application on the car screen is not available if paired phone is not in the car. You can control the camera with voice commands or through the Mustang Mach-e screen or by phone. Live preview is only possible through the application on the phone. Downloading videos and photos is also only possible via the phone or by removing the memory card and reading it in another device, for example a laptop. To get a live preview or download videos, you must connect to the camera via Wi-Fi, which means that you must first turn off the Android Auto application in case it is connected wirelessly so that there is no Wi-Fi connection conflict. The easiest way is to turn off the Android Auto application on the phone.

Additionally, the installation instructions include templates that help you place the video recorder in the right spot on the car’s windshield. However, the consequence of placing the recorder in the recommended way is that the cable is visible on the windshield and the entire recorder is conspicuous.

I wanted the recorder to take up as little space and be as unobtrusive as possible, so I disassembled it to see if it could be made smaller.

The recorder does not have a microphone. The device has a microphone port but it is not connected and is not supported by software.   I found the possibility of lowering the camera by giving up the top cover under which the GPS sensor is located. The GPS sensor protrudes above the recorder, which is why the top dome is needed. I bought a second mirror cover and after testing the optimal camera position, I cut a hole for the GPS sensor so that I could eliminate the top dome of the dashcam. I screwed the dashcam to the rearview mirror cover of the Mustang Mach-e GT With this solution, the video recorder’s power cable is completely hidden under the cover. Getting rid of the camera dome allowed me to avoid conflict with the rear-view mirror. I could move the recorder back further, which gives me access to the side buttons, and the entire recorder sticks out less. The most visually integrated car dashcam for the Ford Mustang Mach-e is the FITCAMX product which comes with the entire mirror cover in which it is built into. However, the FITCAMX dashcam does not have any software integration with the Mustang SYNC4. I also do not like that it draws power directly from the rain sensor which adds an unforeseen by Ford designer power draw.  And ultimately is not all that small on its own.
